University of Texas- San Antonio Student Dr. Shelby Steffenhagen Wins 2022 Eugene L. Gottlieb JCO Student of the Year Award, Presented by American Orthodontics

Dr. Shelby Steffenhagen from the University of Texas San Antonio is the winner of the 2022 Eugene L. Gottlieb Journal of Clinical Orthodontics (JCO) Student of the Year Award, presented by American Orthodontics. Dr. Steffenhagen was selected over 23 other students from schools around the United States in a two-stage, months-long competition judged by members of the JCO editorial board. Her prize includes more than $8,000 worth of products and services.


“Wow! I am deeply honored and humbled to be chosen as the Eugene L. Gottlieb Student of the Year for 2022,” said Dr. Steffenhagen. “Each step of this process has only deepened my passion for and dedication to the field of orthodontics. I could not think of a better way to close out my residency journey, and I look forward to carrying the spirit of lifelong learning with me as I move into a new season of service to my patients."
Dr Steffenhagen grew up in Choctaw, Oklahoma, and attended the University of Oklahoma for both undergraduate and dental school.


Dr. Steffenhagen is the seventh Student of the Year award winner, joining Dr. Amanda Gross of Texas A&M University (2021), Dr. Saro Atam of Stony Brook University (2020), Dr. Katya Skillestad of Texas A&M University (2019), Dr. Samaneh Mojarrad of the University of Pennsylvania (2018), Dr. Moataz Elmahdy of the University of Rochester (2017), and Dr. Krystian Jarosz of Rutgers University (2016). The University of Texas San Antonio is the sixth different school to have a student win the award. American Orthodontics has been the presenter of the award for all seven winners.
